Asbestos and Its Risks on Human Health

Asbestos as a material is not normally considered hazardous itself. Yet, asbestos fiber in case of being absorbed by a person, either through respiratory or digestive organs, can be very harmful for health resulting in several serious diseases and can even be fatal.

Although, asbestos fiber cannot be released via asbestos-containing other materials and constructions directly, it is supposed to do so if asbestos is friable due to being damaged or too old. Three main reasons will be mentioned hereby stating why asbestos is dangerous for human health. First, there are several serious diseases that can be caused due to asbestos fiber, such as lung cancer, Asbestosis which is a chronic, non-cancerous respiratory disease, and

Mesothelioma which is rare type of cancer generally occurring in the thin membrane lining of the lungs, chest, abdomen, and heart. In certain cases, asbestos can serve as a cause for other types of cancerous diseases, such as the ones in the esophagus, larynx, oral cavity, stomach, colon, and kidney. Another danger that asbestos brings with itself is that in case of being a harm for a person, it is very difficult and, sometimes, even impossible to get rid of it.

The issue is that many of the fibers released by it can not only be trapped in the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, but also can pass deep into the lungs or the digestive system where it is already impossible to remove them, as they are very hard to be destroyed. And finally, although it is not necessary to develop certain diseases after experiencing asbestos exposure for many people, it can make worse other underlying diseases, or be a motive to develop them for ones who have "bad genetics", or bad habits, such as smoking.
